Peter Nguyen

Cass Daubenspeck March 2, 2014

Who are you? What do you do for a living?

My name's Peter Nguyen, I design and make leather jackets under my brand LÉON. I also run and write a men's journal called The Essential Man and sometimes do fine art.

Does Sunday begin with a precursor?

No. my days are almost all the same. I don't live for the weekends.

Where are you on a Sunday morning? What's the first thing you see?

I'm in bed, the first thing I see is my girlfriend Sheena whom I subtly wake up by moving closer to her.

What's the first thing you do?

I weigh myself and take a photo. I've been working on a project this year where I over log every aspect of my life - my weight, what I wear, how many books I read, taking a photo of every single meal. Everything. The idea is to present it in a very interesting way at the start of 2015, but I haven't figure it out yet. Right now I'm just logging the data.

What's on the menu?

I consider black coffee my main breakfast every day of the week and any food I eat an accompaniment. Usually I'm eating greek yogurt with cereal and strawberries. I work from home, so on weekdays my girlfriend and I don't see each other for breakfast as I'm barely waking up by the time she's leaving. So we've designated Sundays as our time together.

I cook breakfast for the both of us. Today I'm making my father's Vietnamese egg sandwich, which is a French baguette with butter, 2 runny eggs, pepper and Maggi seasoning. While I usually like my coffee black, this is the only time I stray. This sandwich was made for Vietnamese iced coffee (chicory coffee with sweetened condensed milk). I will be so bold to say that this is the best egg sandwich invented.

Do you prefer company on your day off? If so, who, and what will you do?

Yes, usually my girlfriend. We've established Sundays as a non-electronics day. Most of our time on weekdays consists of binge watching something before we go to bed (which we both love doing). It's an excuse to get out of the house and do something together outside of our neighborhood. Some days we'll visit a museum or visit some shops we've been meaning to see. Lately we've been big fans of watching classic movies at the Film Forum. We usually plan our Sunday outings a week or two in advance.

What's the major distinction for you between a weekend and a weekday?

If anything, I'm not in work mode so much. Though a lot of my work and "play" cross over, I'm just more relaxed and enjoy my time rather than trying to fill it. Our routine for the weekend has evolved a lot since our work schedules on the weekdays have changed, so it doesn't feel "set" yet. But so far, I've been enjoying just getting out of the house and doing things that don't involve my couch or staring in front of a glowing box.

What's the perfect end to a weekend?

Just taking off my shoes from a day out, sitting down with my lights dimmed, Old Fashioned in hand.
